Happy Autumn from London!!!

Aside from my not winning the Ink Book Prize, Simon and I have had a great September, this week alone enjoying Handel's Alcina at the Royal Opera House – though the production was a little wild – checking out the stunning Whistler exhibition at the Tate, and cheering on the British Davis Cup team against Ecuador!!!!

We wound up cheering, almost equally, the gallant Ecuadorians, whose supporters had a snowball’s chance in hell of being heard, as the stadium was packed to the rafters with our fellow Brits – powerfully boosted by a couple of seriously sozzled youths sporting drums, trumpets and - always a bad sign - trombones.

Against this mayhem, there were perhaps forty or so Ecuadorian stalwarts, hoisting – between them – maybe five or six Ecuadorian flags. Whenever the British trombonists paused to replenish their beer mugs, I could just about discern a few forlorn chants of ‘Eq-ua- dor! Eq- ua-dor!’…

Despite this mismatch, the tennis was fantastic – the UK’s Toby Samuel and youthful Arthur Fery eventually swiped every set, and that despite both being debutantes to the Davis Cup bear-pit…

The Tate, on a perfect September day...

... and Whistler's mum, more famously known as Whistler's mother, which is currently in residence. Looking rather stoically resigned, rather like a proud Equadorian after this week's Davis Cup...

I was also a finalist for the BookFest, and got my medal, which was nice.

My previous gift offer: a winner is found!!

This offer (tote bag featuring Marianne, plus fridge magnets featuring Longbourn, Pemberley etc.) was won by Nick H., who lives in the USA, according to SweepWidget, who randomly plucked his name out of the 200+ entries. That's great, but... where in the US????

Nick, if you get this, please send along your snail mail address, as I've asked by email. Otherwise, after about a fortnight, will have to ask SweepWidget to think again...😔

NEW offer from me...

This is a charming tea towel featuring Jane Austen's characters' insults, and  finishing with Mr Bennet's immortal put-down to poor Mary: "You have delighted us long enough"!!!

Includes the fridge magnets featuring Longbourn, Pemberley etc.!!
